Impact of Work-From-Home on Innovation & Collaboration

The widespread global disruption caused by Covid-19 has triggered a new normal that was unthinkable at the start of 2020. The massive devastation unleashed by the pandemic has impacted every aspect of human life and forced organizations to fast-forward the Work-From-Home (WFH) model and address two key challenges – firstly ensuring their employees’ health is protected and secondly, their businesses do not suffer.

So how has been the impact of Work-From-Home? Of course, the WFH model brought to the fore several positives. It saved valuable commuting time for employees – the time employees can now devote either scaling up their work productivity or improving their work-life balance. This working model also enabled employees to save commuting costs as well. All these may sound like Work-From-Home is the best thing to have happened from both the employees’ and employers’ perspectives. Logging in from home has several advantages but one cannot overlook the challenges associated with a WFH model.

Another impact of Work from Home is the element of distraction - you never know when your little kid will slip into your room when you are very busy at work or attending a Zoom meeting. Another disadvantage of a remote working environment is that there is seemingly no end to your work timings as employee’s work can often get extended beyond scheduled work timings. Technical issues (slow internet connection) can also add to the frustration of people logging in from home.

Apart from the advantages and disadvantages of Work-From-Home, another aspect that has come to the fore is what will be the long-term impact of Work-From-Home on innovation and collaboration? Of course, it is too early to make a sweeping statement about the impact of Work-From-Home. A striking impact of Work-From-Home is the absence of physical interaction as a remote working environment takes those animated in-person brainstorming sessions and collaborations out of the equation.

One is not sure why the impact of Work-From-Home pans out in the long run, but it has created a pressing need for organizations to accelerate a supportive working culture,by focusing on employee creativity that can translate into a game-changing idea.

However, it is too early to think WFH as an ideal solution amid Covid-19 times and only time will tell what kind of long-term impact of Work-From-Home on employee collaboration and productivity.
