Impact of Work-From-Home on Collaboration & Innovation
Covid-19 has accelerated the need for a Work-From-Home model that was in organizations’ largest interest of not just ensuring employees log in from home and stay safe from contracting the virus, but also fulfill the larger objective of ensuring their business runs smoothly. Of course, the impact of Work-From-Home has been significant with organizations experiencing the positive as well as the negative sides of a virtual workplace. According to a study conducted by Global Workplace Analytics, 25-30% of the workplace will be working from home multiple days a week by the end of 2021. Further, the study indicated that teleworkers are up to 40% more productive. Of course, there are contradictory views on Work-From-Home as well.
The negative impact of Work-From-Home such as household distractions, slow internet connections, and work timings getting extended beyond usual hours has been frustrating for workers and impacting the performance of employees. Such distractions can be a dampener on collaboration and innovation in a remote working environment. According to a recent survey conducted by the Martec Group (via WTOP News), 59% of respondents said that WFH made workers feel “discouraged” or “trapped owing to constant distractions natural to home as well as the inability to seamlessly communicate and collaborate with their teams.
The focus all around has been on the impact of
Work-From-Home but the biggest roadblock is trust because managers are not known
to trust their team members to do their job honestly in a remote work setup. This
further leaves us with one question: What will be the impact of Work-From-Home
on collaboration and innovation? As well all know face-to-face interactions and
those highly perspective-based brainstorming sessions to discuss a new business
idea or to strategize any project-related work, gets the best out of everyone
but can encounter challenges in a virtual workplace.
The jury is not out on what kind of Work-From-Home impact will be there on collaboration and innovation. But the onus is on
organizations to leverage their HR departments to facilitate a supportive work
culture focused on driving employee creativity, which can translate into a
game-changing idea. Such initiatives can help employees overcome their day-to-day
stress and augment their work productivity.
Indeed the impact of Work-From-Home has set tongues
wagging and the discussion over the same will be a never-ending one. It is only
when Covid-19 is wiped off the planet, we will get to see what will be the Work-From-Home
impact on collaboration and innovation.
